Abstract

The Christian work ethic is an expression of faith manifested through responsibility, perseverance, honesty, and service in everyday life. In Christian tradition, work is understood as a vocation, a divine calling that encompasses both spiritual and social dimensions, and as participation in the missio Dei, the mission of God in the world. In the context of education, character formation should not only emphasize cognitive development but also spiritual and moral values rooted in the Gospel. Values such as love, justice, forgiveness, and hope form the foundation of a work ethic that is not only productive but also spiritually meaningful. This article aims to explore how Gospel values can be systematically integrated into character education to shape a resilient and contextual Christian work ethic. Using a qualitative approach and literature-based study of theological-pedagogical sources, the article highlights key principles of Christian work ethic, including work as vocation, service as an expression of love, and integrity and honesty as the basis of action. The study draws on Church documents such as Gaudium et Spes and Evangelii Gaudium, as well as academic literature including Keller & Alsdorf (2012), Stevens (2012), and Witherington (2011), which emphasize work as a spiritual space and a means of Gospel witness. Findings indicate that integrating Gospel values into character education can foster individuals who are responsible, possess integrity, and are oriented toward service. When Gospel values are embodied through curriculum design, teacher role modeling, spiritual reflection, and social service, character education becomes a transformative pathway for forming a generation that is not only intellectually competent but also spiritually and ethically mature. This article recommends the development of character education curricula grounded in Gospel values as a strategic approach to cultivating a Christian work ethic relevant to contemporary challenges.
